The DMYC Regatta

It is that time of year for all our racing sailors – regatta season. The DMYC Regatta will be held on the 28th June so you have plenty of time to hone your racing skills. And some good news for a change – SSE Airtricity have come on board as our main sponsor this year; so many thanks to Stephen Wheeler MD and Ms Jillian Saunders Marketing Manager of SSE Airtricity. You will see their logos being attached to all our launches and club signs and literature. We also hope to have members of SSE Airtricity with us on the day. Please make them feel welcome (they might even join the DMYC!)

The first of the club regattas kicks off this weekend hosted by our friends in the RIYC. We wish them the best of luck and good sailing weather.

New Members

This will be the first Commodore’s Newsletter our 53 (yes 53) new members will read. I have written to each of them asking what their sailing / boating preference is or if they have a boat themselves and are looking for crew. Karin has kindly agreed to put together a spread sheet and try to match up everybody. For all our existing members I am attaching a copy of the sheet so that we can get everybody involved. We know that there are boats short of crew for various events / cruises so please complete it or the one up on the notice board.

This increase in membership has come from a variety of sources. The Sail Spree was one and was a great success with 26 visitors on the day. But one of the other more important ones was and is “word of mouth”. Various members (new and old) have just chatted to people passing by or in the harbour generally. You know who you are and all I can say is “thank you”.

Volunteerism

The DMYC was built on volunteerism – some of the original members are still doing it! We not only have additional boatmen but also a building maintenance crew. The club is being freshened up and looks very well. Our thanks to all who are involved and we will continue with encouraging people to join in.
Friday Night Sessions

As promised (or threatened!) the DMYC singers (?) will have their first session of Friday 6th June starting 20.30hrs (ish) and ending when Carlus gets fed up serving drink! If you have a song, a poem or a story to tell we would welcome your company at this very informal gathering. Capt Jim will be there with his feadog, Ronan with his wealth of songs, Paul with his stories and you never know who else will turn up so please join us – all are welcome.

European Oppies Championship

These championships are being held on 4th July out of Dun Laoghaire Harbour. We are pleased to be hosting 10 boats the week end of 20th -22nd June, and 30 boats for the week of 30th to 4th July for their training sessions. There will be very enthusiastic crews, all seasoned junior sailors, using the club during those days. Joe and Dennis and the Scouts will be coordinating the slipping and the storage of the boats so let’s make these young sailors very welcome to the DMYC. More details will be circulated closer to the time. Their mentors will of course respect our own sailing and, in particular, racing schedule during these dates.

IDRA Open Day

Our colleagues in the IDRA Fleet are having their Open Day based in the club on 25th May starting at 14.00hrs and running for the rest of the afternoon. So if you know of anybody who wants to give these fantastic dinghies a try (or you want to try it yourself) I’ll see you in the club on Sunday afternoon – let’s hope for good sailing weather!

Memories

On a slightly more somber note we marked during the last few weeks the deaths of two sailors connected with the club, Earl Gill and Graham Elms. Our condolences to their families and friends.

Ruffians

Did you know that every year there is a North – South event in this very (very competitive) one design class. This year it is being held on next Sunday. Three boats from the DMYC will be participating so good luck and enjoy.

Club Rooms

Once again just a gentle reminder that if you have a function you would like to run please don’t be afraid to mention it to Karin, Carlus, John Govan or any of the committee. We have a number of functions booked in (wedding reception, birthday parties etc) but we would always welcome more. Catering can be arranged if required – just ask!
